The Risk Factors Associated with High Blood Pressure in Male White Collar Workers

Abstract
This study was conducted to evaluate the risk factors associated with high blood pressure in a group of 887 male white collar workers ages over 20 who had never taken the medication for hypertension. By the questionnaire, the informations of family history for hypertension, education level, monthly income, alcohol consumption and smoking habit were obtained. Height, weight and blood pressure were measured by a trained nurse. The level of fasting blood sugar, total cholesterol, bight-density lipoprotein cholesterol and triglyceride were tested by enzyme method. Statistical analysis, ANOVA, stepwise multiple regression and odds ratio were performed using SAS package programe.
The results obtained were as follows:
1. There were significant difference among age groups in systolic and diastolic blood pressure, body mass index, fasting blood sugar, and cholesterol except HDL-cholesterol.
2. The significant risk factors associated with systolic or diastolic blood pressure were obesity(BMI), age, blood cholesterol, alcohol intake, family history for hypertension, fasting blood suger, monthly income and smoking. Smoking habit and monthly income had negative correlation.
3. The odds ratios of age, overweight, hyperglycemia and hypercholesterolemia for hypertension were 4.49, 2.85, 2.32 and 2.82 respectively, In conclusion, it suggested that the removal of the risk factors associated with high blood pressure could contribute prevention of hypertension.
